HP Prints Blank Pages — Different Causes for Inkjet and LaserJet, Here Are Both

Step 0 — Is the computer even involved?
Print a report from the printer's own panel (Tools/Reports → Print Quality Diagnostic on inkjets; Reports → Configuration Page on LaserJets). If that comes out blank too, skip the driver entirely — it's ink or toner. If the report prints fine, the problem is the document, app or driver: try another app, then set the driver's paper type to Plain and quality to Normal.
Inkjet (DeskJet, ENVY, OfficeJet, Smart Tank)
- Tape and vents. On a new cartridge, the pull-tab tape over the nozzles must be fully removed; on some cartridges a second small tape covers the air vent on top — remove it too, or ink can't flow.
- Reseat. Remove the cartridge, wait 10 seconds, reinstall until it clicks. The copper contacts must sit flat against the carriage pins; an angled cartridge reports "installed" but doesn't fire.
- Clean the printhead from the panel. Tools → Printer Maintenance → Clean Printhead (or from HP Smart → Printer Settings → Print Quality Tools). Print the diagnostic again. Do this up to three times, with a 30-minute pause between rounds — the ink needs time to dissolve dried residue.
- Manual clean (integrated-printhead cartridges only). Dab the nozzle plate on a lint-free cloth dampened with warm distilled water for 30 seconds; never rub, never touch the contacts. Let it dry and reinstall.
- Smart Tank models: blank pages after a refill usually mean air in the tubes. Run Prime Printhead from Tools (it uses ink, so only once) and make sure the tank caps are closed.
- Still blank in one colour: replace that cartridge if it has an integrated printhead; on OfficeJet Pro 8000/9000 see the printhead guide.
LaserJet (LaserJet, LaserJet Pro, Color LaserJet)
- Sealing tape. New toner cartridges ship with a plastic strip through the side; pull it straight out. A cartridge with the strip still in prints perfectly blank pages while reporting full toner.
- Redistribute toner. Remove the cartridge, rock it gently side to side five or six times. If print returns, the cartridge is near empty regardless of the level readout.
- EconoMode off. Printing preferences → Paper/Quality → uncheck EconoMode. Very faint, near-blank output on old cartridges is often EconoMode plus low toner.
- Drum unit (models with a separate drum, e.g. LaserJet Pro M1xx/M2xx "Neverstop" and some Color LaserJets): a worn or light-exposed drum prints blank or grey. Check the drum-life counter on the panel.
- Transfer roller: if the self-test prints but with almost no toner sticking, the transfer roller (under the cartridge) is dirty or worn. Wipe with a dry cloth; replace if the sponge surface is glazed.
- Non-HP toner: chips that misreport, and toner formulations that won't fuse, both produce blank or ghosted output. Test with the HP cartridge to confirm.
Blank pages between normal pages
Not a supply problem. In the application's print dialog check for a "separator page", "print blank page after each job" or duplex setting (single-sided documents printed as duplex leave the back blank). In Windows: Printer properties → Advanced → Separator Page → none.
Still stuck? A technician can fix it remotely today.

Frequently asked questions
Ink says full but pages are blank — how?
Ink level is measured by the cartridge chip, not by what reaches the paper. Dried nozzles, a vent blocked by tape, or an unseated cartridge all give "full" ink and a blank page.
Does a new cartridge always fix blank pages?
No. On HP printers with an integrated printhead in the cartridge (DeskJet, ENVY, OfficeJet 3000–5000 series) a new cartridge does replace the nozzles. On OfficeJet Pro 8000/9000 the printhead is separate and a new cartridge changes nothing if the printhead is dried.
The page is blank but the printer took a normal time to print.
Then the printer believes it printed. That points to ink delivery (inkjet) or toner transfer (laser), not a driver problem. A driver problem usually finishes instantly.
Only black is blank; colour prints fine.
Classic dried black nozzles (black pigment ink dries fastest). Run two cleaning cycles with 30 minutes between them before replacing the black cartridge.
