HP Printing Slowly — Rank the Cause Before Changing Anything

- Quality & Quiet Mode. Printing preferences → set quality to Normal/Draft and paper type to Plain. On the printer panel, turn Quiet Mode off (Settings → Preferences) — it can halve speed by design.
- Network link. Print the Wireless Test Report; signal "Poor" means each page trickles in. Move the printer, or test with a USB cable — instant speed over USB confirms the network was the bottleneck.
- Driver path. On LaserJets, the PCL 6 driver renders faster than PostScript for everyday documents; on any HP, the Microsoft IPP class driver can be slower than HP's own. Check Printer properties → Advanced for the driver name and install HP's (see the driver guide).
- Low ink servicing. Inkjets pause to service the printhead more often as a cartridge empties. Long whirring pauses between pages + a low cartridge = replace the cartridge.
- Heavy documents. Scanned PDFs and photo-laden slides are enormous. In Adobe Reader, Print → Advanced → "Print as image" often speeds a problem PDF; or print at 300 dpi instead of 600 in the driver.
- Duplex. Two-sided printing waits for ink to set before flipping. For a big draft, print single-sided.
Spooler-side slowness
Jobs that sit in the queue for a minute before the printer even wakes: clear the queue and restart the Print Spooler (procedure in the spooler guide), and disable "Start printing after last page is spooled" in Printer properties → Advanced so pages start as they render.

Frequently asked questions
Is slow printing a sign the printer is dying?
Rarely. Speed is governed by settings and data flow. The exception: an inkjet doing long servicing pauses between pages with very low ink — replace the low cartridge and speed returns.
First page is slow, the rest are fast.
Normal on LaserJets (fuser warm-up) and worsened by sleep settings. Reduce Auto-Off/Sleep delay if the first-page wait bothers you; the trade-off is standby power.
Photos print slowly even on Normal.
Photo paper types force high-quality passes regardless of the quality slider. That's by design — a borderless 4x6 at best quality is minutes, not seconds.
