Setting Up an HP Printer on Wi-Fi — The Right Method for Your Model

Quick answer Screenless HP printers: put the printer in setup mode (hold Wireless + Cancel 5 seconds), then use HP Smart on your phone. Printers with a screen: Wireless → Settings → Wireless Setup Wizard and pick your 2.4 GHz network. Afterwards, reserve the printer's IP in your router so Windows never loses it.

Before you start — two minutes that prevent most setup failures

Know your 2.4 GHz network name and password. If your router uses one name for both bands, be ready to temporarily separate them or pause 5 GHz (see the Wi-Fi connection guide).
Remove all packing tape and the orange cartridge/printhead protectors. A setup that stalls on "Initializing" is often a strip of tape.
Put the printer within a few metres of the router for setup; move it afterwards.
If it's an HP+ model, decide now whether you want HP+ (requires an HP account, always-on internet, genuine cartridges). The choice can't be reversed later.

Method A — HP Smart (screenless DeskJet 2700/2800/4100/4200, ENVY 6000/6400, Tango, Smart Tank 5000)

Power on. A new printer boots into setup mode automatically — the wireless light blinks. If it isn't blinking, hold Wireless + Cancel (X) for 5 seconds (ENVY 6000: hold the rear Wi-Fi button 5 seconds).
On your phone: join your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, turn off mobile data, install HP Smart, allow Bluetooth and location permissions (needed to discover the printer).
Open HP Smart → Add Printer → choose the printer when it appears → enter your Wi-Fi password when prompted.
The wireless light goes solid when it joins. HP Smart then offers driver setup for this phone; for a Windows PC or Mac, install HP Smart there too and click Add Printer — it finds it on the network.

Method B — Wireless Setup Wizard (OfficeJet, OfficeJet Pro, ENVY Photo, LaserJet with touch screen)

On the printer touch screen: Wireless icon (or Setup → Network) → Wireless Settings → Wireless Setup Wizard.
Choose your network. If only 5 GHz-named networks appear or the list is empty, fix the router side first.
Type the password. Use the shift key for capitals; check the "show password" box if present.
Confirm. Print the Wireless Test Report from the same menu — it reports PASS on every line when setup is correct.
Install on computers: Windows → HP Smart (home) or the full-feature software (OfficeJet Pro / LaserJet); Mac → System Settings → Printers & Scanners → Add, it appears automatically.

Method C — WPS

Hold the printer's Wireless button 3–5 seconds until it blinks, press WPS on the router within 2 minutes. Fast when it works; unavailable on most ISP gateways and mesh systems.

Method D — Wi-Fi Direct (no router)

Enable Wi-Fi Direct on the printer (Wireless → Wi-Fi Direct → On; on screenless models hold the Wireless and Info buttons together). Join the network named DIRECT-xx-HP… from your device using the password on the printer's report. Useful for a guest laptop or a shop with no Wi-Fi, but the device loses internet while connected.

After it connects — make it stick

Reserve the IP. In the router's DHCP settings, reserve the address the printer got (from its Network Configuration page) against its MAC address. This single step prevents the "printer offline" problem on Windows.
Turn off Auto-Off. Settings → Power Management → Auto-Off → Never.
Update firmware while it's online: Settings → Printer Update, or through HP Smart.
Print a test page from each device before moving the printer to its final spot.

On Windows, after setup, check Printer properties → Ports. A Standard TCP/IP port on the reserved IP is stable; a WSD port breaks when the address changes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to use HP Smart to set up my HP printer?

For screenless models sold since 2019 (DeskJet 2700+, ENVY 6000+, Tango) it is the intended method and the easiest. Models with a touch screen can be set up entirely from the printer using the Wireless Setup Wizard, no app needed.

Setup asks me to create an HP account — is that required?

For HP+ printers, yes: HP+ activation requires an HP account and an internet connection, and it is a one-way choice made during first setup. For non-HP+ printers you can skip the account and still print.

Can I set it up with a USB cable and then switch to Wi-Fi?

Yes. Install with USB, then in HP Smart or the printer's software choose "Convert a USB-connected printer to wireless". The printer copies your Wi-Fi details over the cable.

The setup keeps failing at the last step.

Nearly always the phone reconnected to 5 GHz or to mobile data mid-setup. Turn off mobile data, forget the 5 GHz network temporarily, and repeat.
