HP Prints But Won't Scan — Fix the Scan Path, Not the Printer
By Ryan Green · Updated August 2026 · Independent guide · PrinterCare USA LLC (not affiliated with any printer manufacturer)
Step 1 — Isolate in two tests
- Copy test on the printer: put a page on the glass, press Copy. If the copy is fine, the scanner hardware works, full stop.
- Neutral app test: Windows Scan app (Microsoft Store) or Mac Image Capture → select the HP → Scan. If this works, HP's software is the problem, not the connection — go to Step 3. If it can't see the scanner at all, go to Step 2.
Step 2 — Network path (neutral app can't find the scanner)
- Printer and computer on the same network (not one on guest Wi-Fi). Print a config page and ping the printer's IP, or open it in a browser.
- Windows Firewall/VPN: pause the VPN; ensure the network profile is Private, not Public. Scanning needs inbound traffic that Public blocks.
- WSD scanning quirk: remove the printer and re-add it by IP with the HP driver — WSD-added devices often print but lose the scan function.
Step 3 — Rebuild HP's scan stack
- Uninstall all HP software for the device (keep HP Smart if it's your install source). Restart.
- Home inkjets: reinstall via HP Smart, scan from HP Smart → Scan. Enable Printer Settings → Scan to Computer for panel-initiated scans.
- OfficeJet Pro / LaserJet MFP: install the full-feature software from HP's support site — the basic driver Windows installs cannot scan. This single wrong-driver issue explains most "prints but won't scan" machines.
- Check Windows services: Win+R → services.msc → Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) → Running, Automatic. Also "Shell Hardware Detection".
ADF-specific problems
Glass scans work but the document feeder doesn't: open the ADF lid, clear any scrap, and clean the narrow strip of glass to the side of the main platen (that's where the ADF actually reads). Streaky ADF scans come from a mark on that strip the width of a hair.
Still stuck? A technician can fix it remotely today.
Independent remote support — you watch every step, and you pay the flat $49 only after your printer is working. $0 if we can't fix it.
Frequently asked questions
Why does printing work when scanning doesn't?
Printing and scanning use different software channels. Printing needs only the print driver; scanning needs the scan driver plus, over a network, an inbound connection from printer to computer that firewalls love to block. That asymmetry is the whole story.
Scan works from the printer's panel but not from the computer.
"Scan to Computer" must be enabled per computer in HP Smart (Printer Settings → Scan to Computer → Enable). Windows firewall must allow HP Smart on private networks.
Do I need HP Scan or can I use Windows tools?
Windows Scan (free, Microsoft Store) and macOS Image Capture both scan any AirPrint-era HP over the network without HP software — a fast way to prove the hardware works while you fix the HP stack.
