HP Error E2 — Page Length Didn't Match the Job

Quick answer
E2 means the paper's length disagreed with the job — the printer reached the end of the sheet earlier or later than expected. Almost always a Legal/Letter/A4 mix-up or two sheets feeding together. Cancel the job, set the true paper size in the driver, reload the stack, reprint.
Fix sequence
- Press Cancel. Remove the part-printed sheet if it's still in the path (pull toward the output, gently).
- Check what the document asked for: in the app's print dialog, look at Paper Size. A US Legal document sent to a tray of Letter paper is the classic E2.
- Set the driver size to what's physically loaded (Printing preferences → Paper/Quality on Windows; the print dialog on Mac).
- Fan the paper stack before reloading — two sheets feeding as one changes the effective length and triggers E2 intermittently.
- Reprint.
Recurring E2 with correct settings
- Double feeds: humid or fresh-from-wrapper paper sticks together. Fan it; store paper flat and dry. If double-feeding continues, wipe the pick roller (see the jam guide, zone 2) — a glazed roller grabs pairs.
- Custom sizes: labels or card stock set as a custom size must match the sheet within a few millimetres; measure and correct the custom size definition.
- Half-torn sheet left inside: a leftover half-sheet feeds first and ends early. Open the rear cleanout and check.

E1 is width/size mismatch detected before printing; E2 is length mismatch detected as the page feeds — the paper ended sooner or later than the job expected.

Photo paper set as Letter in the driver does this. Set the actual photo size (4x6, 5x7) in the driver and load the photo tray or align the stack to the guide marks.
Does E2 damage the printer?
