HP Error E6 — General Error: Reset First, Then Rule Out the Three Triggers

The reset, done right
- Leave the printer ON. Pull the power cord out of the back of the printer.
- Unplug the other end from the strip/wall too. Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug into a wall outlet directly — E6 is notorious with power strips, UPSes and worn extension leads on these low-cost supplies.
- Reconnect the printer end, power on, and let the full startup finish without opening doors.
If E6 comes back
- Jam remnants. Open the rear cleanout and the cartridge door; remove any fragment. E6 frequently follows an incompletely cleared E4.
- Carriage path. Power off, slide the carriage by hand across its travel, remove obstructions (see the E3 guide — the checks are the same).
- Cartridges. Reseat both. A cartridge with dirty contacts can fail the startup check and surface as E6 on some firmware.
- Cord and outlet. Try a different power cord if you have one (they're standard figure-8 or cloverleaf on many models) and a different wall circuit.
When it's terminal
E6 at every power-on, direct wall power, clean path, reseated cartridges — that's a logic-board or power-supply fault. On DeskJet/ENVY hardware the repair exceeds the printer's price; in warranty it's an exchange. Save your ink cartridges — they'll fit the like-for-like replacement model.

Frequently asked questions
Is E6 always hardware?
No — E6 is a catch-all "something failed a check" code. A large share clear permanently with one proper power reset. It's only hardware if it returns after resets and the trigger checks below.
E6 right after a paper jam.
Common: the jam recovery left the carriage or feed system in a bad state. Clear all paper fragments (including the rear cleanout), then power reset.
E6 blinking vs solid.
Blinking usually accompanies a recoverable state — reset clears it. A solid E6 that returns immediately at every power-on points to a persistent hardware fault.
