HP "Printer Failure" — Work the Reset, the Carriage, Then the Ink System, in That Order

By · Updated August 2026 · Independent guide · PrinterCare USA LLC (not affiliated with any printer manufacturer)

Quick answer "Printer Failure — there is a problem with the printer or ink system" is HP's blanket fault message. Fix order that resolves most cases: (1) full 60-second unplug reset, (2) clear the carriage path and reseat cartridges, (3) clean printhead contacts on models with a removable printhead, (4) semi-full reset from the support menu. If it still returns, it's hardware and the decision is warranty vs. replacement.

1 — Full power reset

Printer on → pull the cord from the printer → wait 60 seconds → plug into a wall outlet directly → power on → let startup finish completely (it can run a servicing cycle for two minutes). Test print.

2 — Mechanics

  1. Open the cartridge door. Remove any paper fragment or object anywhere in the carriage's travel.
  2. Power off; slide the carriage gently across its full path by hand. It must move freely.
  3. Reseat every cartridge until each clicks. Close the door fully.

3 — Ink system (OfficeJet Pro 8000/9000, OfficeJet 6900/7700)

These use a removable printhead whose contacts oxidise or collect ink mist. Follow the reseat-and-clean procedure in the printhead guide — once, carefully. On ENVY/DeskJet the printhead is in the cartridges: try a known-good genuine cartridge in the suspect slot instead.

4 — Semi-full reset (touch-screen models)

  1. Tap the Back arrow four times quickly on the Home screen (or corner-tap sequence on some models) to open the Support menu.
  2. Resets Menu → Semi-Full Reset. The printer restarts with error state cleared; network settings survive on most models.
  3. Print a Print Quality Diagnostic from Tools and keep it — it's your baseline if the error recurs.

The decision point

Printer Failure that returns after steps 1–4 is real hardware: printhead (recurs with worsening print quality), power supply (random, often with restarts), or logic board (immediate at power-on). Under HP's one-year warranty, stop here and claim — further disassembly can void it. Out of warranty: a printhead on OfficeJet Pro 8000/9000 is a buyable part; anything else on consumer inkjets costs more than the printer. Our $49 remote session can run the diagnosis with you and tell you honestly which case you have before you spend anything.

Frequently asked questions

Is Printer Failure the same as Ink System Failure?

They overlap. "Printer Failure / problem with printer or ink system" is broader — it also fires on carriage and mechanical faults. If your screen shows a 0xc19a… code, use the Ink System Failure guide; without a code, start here.

Will unplugging really fix it?

Frequently, yes — the message often reflects a one-off servicing error that clears when the electronics fully power-cycle. That's why the 60-second unplug is always step one.

It clears then returns every few days.

A recurring pattern points to the ink system (printhead) on OfficeJet/ENVY, or a failing power supply. Run the print-quality report after each clear; deteriorating colour blocks confirm the printhead.
